EDUCATIONAL CLIP: Discovering Girona: Ask and you will find!

The following clip is about 2 tourist arriving on holiday to Girona. The educational purpose is to teach when you go abroad how to ask directions, accommodation and order food, it also shows that if you ask politely, people will help and recommend you.
We thought that the 3 main scene's of the video where common situations that tourists always find themselves when they go on holiday, so they needed useful expressions:
In the first scene you can see the 2 toursits arriving at the airport and asking how can they get to Girona city.
The second scene show's the couple at the welcome desk of the hotel asking for their booked room.
Finally, the last scene is about the couple ordering food.

Internet at class is a production of the Education Department and Society of Information Secretary which aim is the creation of curricular materials based on Internet. In this application you can find a huge variety of didactic units corresponding to different areas and levels. There are a lot of activities, materials and web quests to learn based on internet.

We have particularly chosen a didactic unit destinate to primary mid level named “The rivers of Catalonia”. We think this didactic unit will be interesting for students because it includes interactive activities to learn concepts related to the rivers in general and to identify the rivers of Catalonia in the map.

ACTIVITY 8: SCAVENGER HUNT - A TRIP THROUGH OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

The main reasons for which we have chosen this hunt are:

It is designed for use by elementary mid level students in conjunction with their study of the solar system.

The objective is for students to increase their knowledge of the solar system by visiting a variety of internet sites. Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

Lesson
1. Students should have some familiarity with the planets of the solar system prior to starting the hunt.
2. Each student should have a printed copy of the worksheet on which to record his/her answers.
The Big Question: after completing the questions for each planet, the students should review their answers to see what was learned about the environment on each planet. The students are then asked to select a favorite planet to return to. They should use their new knowledge to explain their choice.

The European Space Agency, ESA, has a very interesting and attractive web site, for kids aged between 6 and 12. ESA has a huge resources of facts, space news, information, games, animations, figures, fun and photos on space, Earth seen from space, and downloads.

We hardly recommend this site because we think that it is a well designed site for Kids to learn about space, planets and this kind of thinks, interacting at the time they have fun. Therefore, this site can be also used at school. It offers a lot of different activities related to space, universe, earth and much more that can be proposed to do in Natural, Social and science class.

Edu365.cat is a educational web site from the Education Department of “la Generalitat of Catalonia”. It is orientated and developed specifically for pupils and families, and it is based on the infrastructures and services of the Telematic Educational Net of Catalonia (XTEC).

In this site you can find news, agenda, chats, channels, and other resources separated by educational levels. Therefore, this site provides teachers a lot of resources and services that can help them in developing their teaching task.

Our educational proposal is addressed to children of primary school. Mainly, we work the competences of coexisting and world inhabitant, social, civic, and linguistics. We frame it inside the areas of foreign languages and natural, cultural and social sciences.

What we want to achieve with this study is that students, in an individual way, learn the vocabulary related to nationalities, countries and continents of the world through different images, and also to distinguish some of the main country flags.

We also propose a relationship of flags with the respective nationalities, which could develop in the activity book of oral communication.

Sequence of the study:

The first image displayed will show to the student the location of the 5 continents and its names, also with some flags. The second image will show different flags with the name of the country and the belonging nationality. In the third place, we propose an activity consisted in relating flags with nationalities. Finally, appears an image with the world map and a grammar rule used to identify which are the different terminations to designate nationalities with the help of colors. It is easy to identify which endings correspond with each country as they relate to different colors.

It consists on runnig through the forest. Participants are given a map which they use to find control points. All you need is a compass and a good pair of legs.

Whales stranded in Australia

Dozens of whales stranded in southern Australia last week. Whales and dolphins are some of the most intelligent creatures on Earth, so why whales and dolphins sometimes swim into shallow water and end up stranding themselves on beaches? We don’t know. Scientist are still searching for answers. There are many theories about why.
Some scientists have theorized that a single whale or dolphin may strand itself due to illness or injury, swimming in close to shore to take refuge in shallow water and getting trapped by the changing tide. Because whales are highly social creatures that travel in communities, so mass strandings can occur when healthy whales refuse to abandon a sick or injured member and follow them into shallow water.
Another persistent theory about the cause of whale stranding is that something disrupts the whales’ navigation system, causing them to lose their orientation and end up on the beach.
Other possible causes put forth for the disruption of whale and dolphin navigation include:
Weather conditions, diseases (such as viruses, brain lesions, parasites in the ears or sinuses), underwater seismic activity, magnetic field anomalies, and unfamiliar underwater topography.
Despite the many theories, scientists have not found an answer that explains all whale and dolphin strandings. Perhaps there is no single answer.
